Try Somewhere New :: KENNEBUNK, MAINE

Most people visiting New England have heard of Kennebunkport – beautiful riverside restaurants, boutique shopping, the Bush Compound, and gorgeous summer homes of the wealthy.

But have you ever taken a day to explore Kennebunk – away from the Dock Square area?

With stunning beaches, a charming downtown, and delicious restaurants, Kennebunk is its own fabulous vacation destination. We left the girls with my in-laws for the afternoon and took our time discovering this delightful town.

THINGS TO DO

KENNEBUNK FARMER’S MARKET

Located right in the heart of downtown Kennebunk is a large, covered pavilion that hosts the Kennebunk Farmer’s Market every Saturday in the summer. *Note – due to new COVID-19 guidelines, the Farmer’s Market has moved to the parking lot behind the bowling alley. It’s a produce-only market, so you can expect to find the freshest products and you know you’re supporting the hardworking farmers in the area. From soft, flakey breads to organic meats to gourmet dog treats, you’re sure to walk away with a bag full of delicious goods. For a list of the vendors and additional information, visit their website here.

MOTHER’S BEACH

Kennebunk has multiple gorgeous beaches, including Gooch’s Beach, Colony Beach, Goose Rock’s Beach, but our favorite is Mother’s Beach. Warm, smooth sand, large rocks to climb and explore, and – the best part – a great playground right on the beach! Also, the homes overlooking the water are stunning and make for a scenic stroll if you want a break from the beach.

Parking is limited and geared towards locals with parking stickers. If all spots are full, there are a few side roads that you can park on, just make sure to check all signs and don’t block anyone’s driveway. As with all beach trips in Maine, be sure to check the tide chart before you head over – the majority of the beach disappears during high tide.

SHOPPING

Downtown Kennebunk is filled with a variety of great mom and pop shops. Ranging from kids toys to Maine swag to home decor, there’s a store here for everyone.

Along Route 1, a bit before Dock Square, is Wallingford Farm. During the summer, they have a show-stopping display of full, lush hydrangeas with over 15 different varieties. Inside you’ll find both farm and coastal items including dried flowers, starfish, shells, locally-made jellies and freshly baked goods at their cafe.

WHERE TO EAT

Casual

Bennett’s Sandwich Shop – Located right off Rt. 1, Bennett’s is in a nondescript blue building that looks more like a neighborhood convenience store than well-known sandwich stop. They’re famous for huge, loaded up Philly Cheesesteaks so that’s of course what we got. Tender meat, gooey cheese, perfectly sautéed vegetables – it was delicious! Their menu includes other great options like breakfast subs, fresh salads, chicken cheesesteaks, and cold subs.

It was busy when we stopped in around 1pm. Online ordering was very popular – clearly the locals know to avoid the long lines, conveniently placing their order through the website ahead of time. Then they just popped in and grabbed their food. Picnic tables and a few adirondack chairs were located outside for guests to enjoy meals onsite.

Perfect Date Night

Local 50 – Have you ever left a restaurant thinking “that was the best meal I’ve had in a long time”? That’s how we felt after dining at Local 50 in downtown Kennebunk. Our server was friendly and knowledgable, the decor a beautiful modern rustic, and the food was simply amazing. The chef cooks with locally grown ingredients and the menu is constantly changing and evolving with what is in season. Please note – they are only open for dinner so don’t plan on grabbing lunch here.

Upscale

White Barn Inn – This is at the top of my bucket list of places I’d love to eat. Fine dining at it’s best, the White Barn Inn Restaurant serves contemporary New England cuisine in a romantic and refined atmosphere. It’s a pre-set cost for a four-course dining experience with luxurious dishes like the Mini Caviar and Truffle Lobster Roll, the Beef Tartare Atop Roasted Bone Marrow, and the Beef Tenderloin with Foie Gras Crust.

Also around Kennebunk:
Village Tavern
Bandaloop
Texas Grace Kitchen
Duffy’s Tavern & Grill
Cherie’s Bistro
Crotux Kitchen & Taphouse (at the bowling alley)

I hope you take a day to enjoy Kennebunk and adore this lovely town like we did. Been before? Leave a comment and let me know your favorite spot! And keep an eye out for a post on the best of Kennebunk + Kennebunkport Dock Square area, coming soon!
